Nethealth network: InternetThis is a research project that will combine the Nethealth system with data from other systems in order to present a health indicator of the internet as a whole.Once enough data is collected and the indicators start making sense we will work with organizations like Caida, SANS institute and others to see how this data can be used on their detection mechanisms. This project is in Phase I. As the network is not fully being monitored on a regular schedule, limited data is available. No statistics are available for viewing at this point. Phase I consists of data collection using an initial list of randomly selected websites. Our current database contains approximately 250,000 records with servers scattered across the globe. Of these we have randomly selected about 60,000 websites to start our study. In this study we test 98% of the websites at a rate not to exceed once every 15 minutes. The other 2% may have an increased check frequency to collect better data. The following section is the FAQ for this project.
Nethealth: Internet. Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: Why are you doing this project? There are two main reasons: better detection of network problems and to give something back to the community. Our nethealth system implements a range of algorithms to determine the exact equipment creating a problem within a network. The more data it has the better it can determine where the problem is. As we collect a lot of data, it is only logical that we publish some of the results back so that other people can use it. This helps system administrators see very quickly why their network is unexplicably slow, when it may not be their network at all.
Q: My site is part of your monitoring, how does it affect me?Due to the slow rate of the checks, you should not notice any big load on your system. As a whole, 98% of systems are tested less than once every 15 minutes.
Q: Will others be able to view information about my site? No. The published data will consist of grouped statistics based on things like: country, city, carrier, OS, software used, etc.It will not contain specific addresses or any indicator that your system is even monitored by this project.
Q: I want others see my site supports this projectIf you want to show support for this project, we are planning on having buttons that you can show on your site.We also plan to have a page with a list of sites that support our efforts. We will have both things in place once results are made public.
Q: I don't want my site being testedEven though this project should not cause any noticeable load on any server, we want to make sure our study doesn't interfere with your normal operations. If you have noticed that your website is part of our study and want to be removed please send us an email to: net-2-remove@nethealth.ggsys.net. The subject of your email should be: remove www.yoursite.com Please note that all operations in the nethealth system require confirmation, so you will receive an email that you must reply to in order to complete the operation.
Q: How can I contact you about this project? For information or comments about this project please send us email to: info@nethealth.ggsys.net
